I just changed plugs in my 2002, 8.1, workhorse engine w/25k miles. Every plug had a tan deposit on the ceramic center. Deposit is only on one side, not all the way around. Starts from the center electrode and runs down into the plug center. Any ideas what causes this?

Tan is good! Not sure about the one sidedness you stated????

Good combustion causes it!

There was no need to change those plugs - they should be good for 100k miles in that engine if it is running properly.

Not to worry Ranger, everything is just fine. As stated above you did waste some time and money, but getting familiar with ones engine is priceless.

... unless new plugs are AC Delcos and are gapped to .045". That would be worthwhile (it was for me).

Thanks for the feedback. I know what a normal firing plug looks like but when I noticed this tan crusty deposit on one side - this is not normal. It looks like the plug is firing down the side of the ceramic instead of firing to the negative post. Changed plugs to the higher performance AC Delcos. Noticed a difference right away!!!
