What's That Smell?

We spent Sunday thru Thursday Camping. We had full hookups, but I didn't have the septic hooked up. After 5 days, the Black tank was 1/3, the Gray tank was 2/3. Due to time constraints, I decided to dump the tanks at home. after a 3 hour drive (mostly highway) at 60 mph, we pulled up at home and my wife opened the bathroom door. To say it smelled bad is an understatement. The toilet had about a cup of clean water in it. During the drive home, the generator and both a/c units were running.

Does anybody have any ideas what could have been the source of the smell?

It was more than likely your gray water tank that you were smelling. Your 3 hour trip down the highway probably sloshed the water out of the trap under your shower. Once that water is gone, there's nothing keeping the fumes in. If your bathroom roof vent leaks even a little bit, it will suck fumes out of the gray tank. Some folks don't believe this, but gray tanks often smell worse than black tanks!

You can often find a rubber sink-stopper the right size to fit your drain. Stick it in the hole before you leave camp and your problem is solved!

Do you have a vacuum breaker/anti siphon valve for your black flush system under your sink?

Valve might be stuck open.

Driving might have caused negative pressure and drew air into your bathroom thru the valve.

There might also be a one way grey vent/valve under there also. Check that too.

I pour a little black tank chemical into the sinks and shower drain when I am returning home. Only two ounces in each. The chemical makes it way into the gray holding tank helping control the tank smell.

After 5 days, I'm thinking your tanks were fuller than you think-- particularly the gray. Probably sloshed into the shower on the road. We've found the gray tank to be our limiting factor on the rare times we go without hookups.
