Some of the rest stops along I70 in Kansas have a hose bib on the outside. if you have a long enough hose you could fill from that. FlyingJ in Salina as well - at the RV islands. Just make sure to fill from the fresh bib not the dump rinse out bib. You can dump too for $10 ($5 with a FlyJ card).

Not sure what you are driving but when I ran my Class C I used to fill at convenience type stores, they always have a bib on the side. Just ask and go to town.

I always run a full tank, all 105 gallons - never know when you'll need it - and in 5 yrs of full time and 85,000 earthquaking miles never a tank fail and never a reason to believe there would be one. The opinions some folks have who are "supposed" to be "professionals" is simply, stunning.

We did find water! And thanks to all the comments here we knew to avoid the well water at remote campgrounds. We asked at a travel center and they let us fill from a spigot on the side of their building. We asked at the next campground to be sure the had treated water before filling there. We haven't found a little filter to attach to our hose yet, but we have it on our list of supplies to locate. I LOVE being able to ask questions of everyone here! Thanks for all of your help and discussion!!

Wal-mart sells filters and pressure regulators. Some places have high pressure that will damage your plumbing.

I didn't get my fresh water tank rinsed well enough when we went over Easter weekend, was really glad I had a Britta pitcher to filter the drinking and coffee making water! No on board filter. They are lightweight and work in a pinch if you come up to some stinky water... more likely to be found in South east/central Kansas. It's not bad for you, just smells a little sulfery.

Every small town in Kansas along old 40 ( parrellel I-70) used to have nice campgrounds and really friendly folks. As for traveling full, my Alpenlite has 88,000 miles towing at least half full. 50 gallons. No failure yet.
