I have my very own unit,won't be crawling over in the middle of the night with an eye on

I DO have to get that UPS man to come when she's not home though...

My MH is wired for 50 amp service, but we spend a lot of time at parks with only 30 amp service. And these are the places I'm most worried about power problems.
Do I get a 30 amp in-line surgeguard and use it only at 30 amp parks, or will a hard-wired 50 amp model work with both 30 and 50 amp connections? I thought I saw something on TRC's web site about not using the 50 amp model when connected to 30 amp. I'm confused

I installed the 50amp hardwired Surge Guard in our RV. We rarely use 50amps at CGs because we visit a lot of Texas State Parks. Also, I only put a 30amp plug in for use at our house. The 50amp hardwired model handles 30amps just fine.
Unless you have a washer/dryer, it is unlikely that you need 50amps except to run two roof A/Cs at one time. We sure do that in the heat of our Texas summers but not much otherwise.

I just hooked up my Surgeguard portable unit equipped M/H to a pedestal in a RV park, 50 amp connection. I should add that the reason we bought a portable unit instead of a hard wire unit is because they couldn't mount a hard wire unit for a week, and we were on the road with a new motorhome.
The Surgeguard promptly tripped, and I found the voltage at the pedestal was way below what it should be. In other words, the Surgeguard Low Voltage protection protected me.
We are currently running on 30 amp park power, which is also low, but the Surgeguard accepts it. I will not be using my microwave tonight.
The Surgeguard unit is usually inside a basement compartment, with a cable in and a cable out. If necessary, it can be removed and placed on the ground to reach a far away pedestal. Which we have here.
Bottom line, which ever way you want to go, do protect your RV from some nasty conditions that can exist at the park pedestal. Your RV will thank you.

Bill, the Progressive Industries 50A portable unit I have has a hasp ring that I can lock to the pedestal....isn't that what your portable unit has?

Bob, I believe Bill said he has a Surgeguard (by TRC). They offer locking fixtures too.

Thanks Thomas....The above quote is what caused me to question this...As my Progressive portable unit is a "plug through" unit and I have a cord reel,I was trying to figure this one out.

I have the Surgeguard model # 34750 portable version. We ran on 30 amps last night, for the refrigerator. Couldn't run the coffee pot and electric heater together this morning.But of course, these are pedestal problems and not related to the Surgeguard. Don't have the locking ring, but not a bad idea.

I use the 50amp hard wired model. I picked it up in Pomona at the FMCA rally a few years back. I went with the hard wired because I had plenty of room and didn't want to worry about theft.

i have the 30 amp portable surgeguard which protects for both high and low..to prevent theft i put the unit in the compartment and use an extension cord to the pedestal..jim

Given the fact that the surge protectors job is to shut down or give up its life to protect the motorhome in extreme cases. When it is hard wired into the motorhome and it dies, what then? My understanding is that it has to be taken out of the wiring before electric can be restored. The wires must then be splitted back together again.
The third option is to get a male and female plug set and wire them into your motorhome in the same place you would cut your cable if hard wiring. Then use the plug in type surge protector in your lockable cabinet. If the protector does die or you trade in your motorhome, than you just unplug it and plug the two wires together to have electric again.

RV-Boy, my surge-guard has a by-pass key so if the unit fails, it can be bypassed to restore power. No need to splice cable.
