Why carpet?

Why do motorhomes have carpet on the slides? Not that I can afford a Newell, nor know why they don't have carpet on their slides, but they don't.

We see carpet on fifth wheel, class B, and Class A slides. Why?

It's a weight and fit issue. You can hide a lot of things with carpet when the slide extends, like the joint between the two rooms.

The weight is also a factor. In 2016, Newmar converted their slides to tile. It was a lot of weight and required a new type of mechanism and a sturdier chassis. Their slide now goes all the way out and then straight down. This allows the two tile floors to align.

Because it's cheaper, easier to install & hides better any imperfections than any other covering.

For the same reason they have all converted to that nasty plastic covering on the seating and sofas-CHEAPER! Few would elect to have it in their stick and brick houses or their car for that matter. Give me a quality fabric any day.

The OP answered his own question when he said " not that I can afford a Newell".
It's not just a matter of replacing the carpet with tile. It requires a more robust slide mechanism with more precise alignment. All that costs. If it costs the manufacturer more they must I turn charge more or they go out of business. It is just a matter of economics.

I just did mine a month ago and it was tough. Some are fairly flat, but not mine. Took 3 days of gluing and doing relief cuts.

When I replaced my carpet on the doghouse, I used Weldwood Gel contact cement on both surfaces. It takes 20 or 30 min to setup. During that time, the glue had softened the carpet backer and made it amazingly easy to comply with the contours. Use in a well ventilated area !

That looks good. Our doghouse's are almost identical. My carpet backing was way to stiff to get it to bend.

Slide floor is not flat, only flexible carpet works. Coaches that have "flat slide floors" may have something other then carpet, depending on price point. Extract weight for tile on exposed slide floor being limiting factor, maybe if you have class C, class A, I don't think so. Our bus has ceramic glazed tile, each tile weights 14 lbs. Which equates to 1400 lbs of flooring. Cheaper....I guess if you buy a cheap coach..... maybe.

Would it be practical to cover the doghouse in another type material than carpet. Something easier to clean. Such as naugahyde perhaps.

Not to mention Naugahyde/vinyl/faux leather scuffs and scratches very easily. I would never want it on a doghouse where you cannt help but kick it as you get in and out of the seats.
