Not meaning to pry or embarrass, what are some errors to avoid for the rest of us so as to avoid replacing batteries (other than for age)?

Maintenance followed by maintenance then do not forget to maintain them...

Really just a few things.

Open the cover and just look at them to see if anything spilling or growing.

Check charging voltage

Check water level.

How often?

Check water once a month and mark it on the calendar.

When you add water mark this.

Next time you add water mark this.

Period for water inspection is one month less than time between water adds or once every 6 months MAX.

Get a good quality voltmeter and VERIFY that is accurate and check voltage when you check water.

Locate the data sheets for your batteries and make sure the voltage is what they need.
