Sounds like someone has a Brakebuddy they want to sell you. I have the same car and have towed over 5K miles using the Roadmaster Braksemaster.
Commercial time......
Roadmaster Brakemaster with Brakeaway
The ROADMASTER BRAKEMASTER is a truly PROPORTIONAL braking system. As you brake harder, the towed car brakes respond in direct proportion. For motorhomes with air or air over hydraulic brakes.
Haven't had a problem and love the system. Takes less than 5 minutes to install or disconnect.

One of the sponsors of IRV2, SMI, has a system that should work on the Escape. I have their proportional braking system on my Explorer and it works very well.
