I have a 1980 C J 5 jeep which I will be towing but have received conflicting informatiion about how to set up the trans and transfer case.

I have been told to place the transer case in gear and the transmission in netrual. Another artical said to place both trans and trasfer in neutral and lock the front hubs.
Anybody out there tow this model of Jeep who can help me?

I looked into towing a 1981 CJ5 and finally concluded the only way to tow was on a trailer. Turns out the transfer case splash oil on the gears unless it is being turned from the transmission. Please do your own research because Jeep changed transfer cases often and different years and model had different rules. Best source is the on line Jeep Forums but even there you may get conflicting information.

What transfer case does it have? I havent ever heard of a jeep that could not be flat towed. I'm not positive on jeeps, but my Scout is towed; trans in high gear, T-case in neutral, hubs unlocked. That would be for the D-18, D-20, and the 300. Now if you are Quadra-trac, I dont know anything about it. To know for sure you need to find an origanal owners manual. The information you seek would be in there.

I tow an 83' CJ-7, automatic, inline 6. The book says tranny;park, tranfers case;neutral, hubs locked, key set to first unlocked position. And to start engine every 200-250 miles and run for a few minutes (Dana 300 tranfer case main seals need the lube). I run it through drive and reverse just for good measure. It's worked great for years. Mike, Issaquah, WA
