Hi,
we are new with Motorhomes and need some help with the Toad question.
I want to get a 1998 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4 cummins Diesel (12 Valve) Truck to pull behind the motorhome.
Yes I do know that it is a big toad, but we do need it for work.
Dodge seems to be no help. Ask one guy and he says I can tow it with no problem and ask the next he says no.
Any clue where to find it out.

We are open on the Trans (Manual or Auto)

Look at the facts...it's a 4x4 with real transfer case. It should tow with no issues other than being a 6000 to 7000 lb load on the back of the RV with no brakes.

Mechanically, it should be just like towing a BIG Jeep 4x4.

But, even with a 42foot Diesel Pusher, it could be a bit scary with no brakes on the toad.

P.S. I have a Dodge3500, 5.9L, 4x4, DWR , Crew Cab...best truck I have ever owned and I have owned Chevy's and Ford's too.

The clue would be in getting, the transfer case number , 231 ?, off the tag on the case, then tracking down the internals to see if the oil pump is in the back of the case, to circulate the oil when the rear shaft is turning. If the pump turns with the rear shaft then the truck should be able to be towed 4 down with the case in neutral. Info should be in an owners manual ; if you can find one.
The left front axle spins the spider gears in the front differential so gear lube circulation there won't be an issue.
My big concern with the truck would be steering, and the return to center after being towed through a corner, those trucks tended to be heavy on the wheel and might push the rear end of any coach around while straightening up after a corner.
The front drive axle U joints would have to be in perfect condition , any binding there would just make the return worse.
The book went with my 2000, 2500 4x4, so I can't run out and check.

ok, this is according to a 2000 drw 4x4 3500
shift transfer case to N, key in unlock position, transmission in park. No speed restrictions or miles listed. hope this helps.

Thanks; laj ; I can't remember any changes in the transfer case between 94 & 02. So that should be all, Mike needs.

Mike , you will have to have a hitch and tow bar rated for the weight, and a brake system.
I'd be keeping an eye on the power steering fluid level ; some could be pushed out of the reservoir while towing the truck.
Then make sure you factor in towed miles, for the transfer case fluid change , intervals.

I wish we could haul a small Jeep, but we just need the towing ability and still love Trucks.
Yes do have a 10K tow bars and also one of those brake system you put on the floor, just still looking for the Truck.

The search is still going.

You might see it there is a Dodge truck forum on the internet and ask the question there. I have a 1989 Ford F250 and have found a good bit of information and help on the ford truck forum so that might be worth a try.
