What is the best method to tow this vehicle? I am getting mixed messages on flat or dolly towing. It has auto transmission but I can not find any info in the manual to disconnect transmission for either method.
Thanx!

I believe you need to contact Ford to upgrade the transfer case software.

I have heard that neutral is in the gearbox but you need the software change to get it.

You usually can't dolly tow a 4 wheel drive vehicle.

I have a 98 Mountaineer with a V8 and All Wheel Drive, it's always in 4wd and is not towable with any wheels down and would require a flatbed if broken down. You need to find out exactly what transfer case you have. Some of the Ford automatic transfer cases can be put into "Tow Mode" but like Twinboat stated, it may require a software update in the 4x4 module.

Do you have a 2wd/4wd/auto selection button on the dash? That would point to having an automatic transfer case. Again, I have no selection so it's mechanically all wheel drive permanently.

Thanx guys, I found out that I can put the transmission in a neutral position for 2 or 4 down towing. The community response is much appreciated!
