2000 Nissan Xterra 4x4 5speed towing

The Missus and I have recently purchased a 2000 Nissan Xterra manual (5-speed) and we desparately need to know what we MUST purchase to flat tow that dude.

Is a base plate needed if there are already tow hooks? What are the absolute essentials?

First, check the owners manual to see what it says about Recreational Vehicle Towing.

Second, a tow bar and baseplate will be necessary for the kind of towing you are planning. Blue Ox and Roadmaster are excellent brands. They both also make braking systems for towed vehicles.

That is Third...These braking systems are required in most states, but are something you should have even if not required in your state.

There is a company called REMCO who are towing specialists. Contact them with questions.

Look into flat towing carefully. Wife had a low mile loaded Pathfinder with automatic. We tried first to tow dolly the thing-that left 2 black tire marks from the locked up rear tires. Apparently the computer calculates there is a difference in wheel speed-therefore you are in an emergency situation-so it locks up system. Went to get tow bar and that hitch shop wouldn't touch the Pathfinder for towing. We ended up selling the Pathfinder.

As others have stated you will need a baseplate and tow bar. You will also need a brake system and lights. I 4 down tow a 2003 Xterra 4X4 V6 w/auto trans. Although Nissan says that my setup is not towable, it is, as I have been doing it since 2004. I have put over 20K mile on it. The manual trans Xterras are towable also. The 2000 manuals don't say anything about towing 4down, but starting in 2003 they do give the instructions for towing a Xterra with a manual trans. I won' t go into details on how It is done on this topic(I am typing this on my I phone using the IRV2 mobile app) If you need help with the setup I would be more than happy to help......just PM me.
