All 2005-2009 Escape Hybrids are able to be towed 4 down. They do NOT have the problems that the non-hybrid 2009-up have as they have a different transmission. We have towed our 2008 over 30,000 miles and no problems at all.
All you have to do is start the car and let it run for about 5 minutes, shut the car off, turn the key back to the run position, put the car in neutral, turn the key all the way back counter clockwise BUT DO NOT take the key out of the ignition or the steering wheel will lock.
You should start the vehicle prior to towing.
The information is not in your owner's manual. They did include the info in the 2nd printing of the 2008 manual which is located here:
http://www.motorcraftservice.com/pub.../08hevog2e.pdf and here is the info out of the manual:
"RECREATIONAL TOWING
An example of “recreational towing” is towing your vehicle behind a motorhome.
Your vehicle may be flat-towed (all wheels on the ground) by shifting the transmission into Neutral. This is permitted for Front Wheel Drive (FWD) or Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) vehicles. Your vehicle may be towed up to a speed of 75 mph (120 km/h) but you should always obey local speed limits."
Here is the link to the page for 4 down towing of 2007 Ford Vehicles and you will see that the Escape Hybrid with automatic transmission is listed as YES. They did not make a hybrid with automatic.
