towing a jeep 2008 wrangler. tows great. but, having a problem getting the transfer case to shift from neutral to drive when i want to unhook. lever just won't move. seems if i idle awhile the things shifts fine. so...what is the best way to get the thing to shift easily and is it necessary to let idle for awhile...by the way..automatic transmission.

With Command-Trac it shifts out of neutral or 4W-low easier if you can get the jeep to roll at 1-2 mph.

Sometimes the gears in the t-case are not lined up. You can either move the Jeep forward or back a little bit or you can shift the transmission into gear and back to neutral to see if it will shift into gear.

Sometimes if you're lucky, it goes right in but most of the time the Jeep will need to be moved a little.

What it really needs is to be taken off road and run in 4WD to get some wear on those gears. Mine was real tight as well, but after a few wheeling trips, she loosend up a lot. All the parts are just new and tight. Get out and let her run!

The owners manual says you can get into 4Hi from stop to about 35 MPH. Going into 4Lo you need to be stopped or nearly so.

I have the samr problem, but it is getting easier. The service folks at two dealerships have said that in time with multiple shifts it will poosen up. Also have found that it helps to go N to 4L back to N then 2H.
My overall sequennce is start engine, shift transmission to N turn off engine try shifting xfer case to 2H (if it does not go then I try the sequence of pulling into 4L then quickly and firmly into 2H.

On one of the Jeep forums there was talk about just that problem and it took a dealer fix to make it smoother. Mine is a PITA to shift in to Neutral and back in to 2 or 4 WD. Julia does the prep inside when we are ready to tow but I routinely have to reach over here to pull the transfer case in to neutral. Now, that's not a bad thing mind you
