We've always used the Motorhome Tow Dinghy Guide from Motorhome magazine as a litmus test. According to their list, in 09 the only towable Subaru's were the manual versions of the Impreza, Legacy, and Outback.

Hey Nick,
You might want to correct the spelling of "sportshift" in your first sentence.
Or was omitting the 'f' on purpose?

If you have a manual tranny, you can tow it. If not,you need a trailer because it can NOT be towed 4 down. By the way. I've owned 17 Subarus.

Ask your question on SubaruForester.org. You should get more information than you want and a link or 2 to the official Subaru answers.
Good luck and safe travels!

If the "Sport Shift" is an automatic transmission, then with the 4WD drivetrain you would have to trailer the car. And don't worry about the typo.

A friend had a Legacy Outback before they got their MH. he contacted Subaru Customer Support and asked about towing. The reply he got was that no Subaru models, except the old "eggplant with warts" 360, could be towed either four down or on a dolly.
I would have thought that, with a driveshaft disconnect on the shaft to the rear wheels, dolly towing would have been OK, but he never asked and traded the Outback for a Suzuki Grand Vitara.

I have a 2009 Forester with a manual transmission. It can be toad 4 down.
You need a manual transmission.
