2013 Ford Explorer 4wd XLT

We have a 2013 Explorer 4wd Xlt. I weighed the vehicle with me in it, half tank of gas and nothing else. It was 4800lbs. My Class C will tow to 5000lbs. Don't know the weight of a tow base plate.

I do know that it is 4wheel down towable and that is what I am considering. My car is 6 cylinder automatic.

Anyone tow this vehicle with a class C; what is your experience about the weight and towing?

Thank you

Hi. Heavy equipment all my life. If your class c says it can tow 5000 then it will. Remember all of numbers by manufacturers have a built in cushion. That's not to say you can do something crazy but with the numbers you mentioned I feel your perfectly safe. Another thought though is how your class c will behave on hills etc and the drop in fuel milage when your right at the limit of it's towing ability. Good luck to you

Thanks for your comments. The performance on hills, mountains was part of what I was wondering. The Lexi is rated to 5000lbs on the hitch, 14500 GVWR & 20000 GCWR so we are OK from those points.
Just wondering if anyone was RVing to these limits and if they had any suggestions when doing so and/or any comments about the explorer itself.
I thank you for your thoughts, they are helpful.

Yes you are right the V6 all wheel drive is towable but not the 4 cyl, I don't have a class C but can't see any reason you can't tow the car but I would want toad brakes as I think the weight of the car would be a bit much for a class C to stop it in a emergency or down a steep grade. You might be a little slow going up a Mountain but so what. You will also need a charge line to keep the battery up as the toad brakes will light up the toad brakes every time you brake the coach.

Thanks for your input.

I have been reading the discussions about the toad brakes and setting aside the legal requirement here I would add them in anyway. A few hundred dollars more for the toad brakes is well worth the peace of mind.
