2013 Jeep Liberty Limited

I was looking at this vehicle and talking to the salesperson about towing it 4 down. He said that it could be with no problem. As long as it is 4X4 and has a 4 low in the transfer case. So I have been considering it for my next vehicle. I was having this conversation with a person at our park that owns a 2002 model of this vehicle and he told me that while having his serviced last week, the service manager told him that the new 2013 models could "NOT" be towed 4 down, no matter what transmission/transfer case they have.......... OK, this poses the question: Can the 2013 Jeep Liberty Limited be towed 4 down?????

2012 4 wheel drive can be towed 4 down according to Jeep's owners manual.

Recreational Towing — Four-Wheel Drive Models
The transfer case must be shifted into NEUTRAL (N) and
the transmission must be placed in PARK for recreational
towing. The NEUTRAL (N) selection button is adjacent to
the transfer case selector switch. Shifts into and out of
transfer case NEUTRAL (N) can take place with the
selector switch in any mode position.

The Toledo, Ohio, plant that assembles the Jeep Liberty will go idle next week and not resume its SUV operations until 2013 with an all-new replacement. During that time the plant will undergo $500 million in upgrades and an expansion, creating an additional 1,100 jobs.

There is no 2013 on the market.

I quoted the 2012 manual as there is no 2013 owners manual on the Jeep web site

If you go on Jeep's website, they don't have a 2013 Liberty so we can't see the specs. I do know the Toledo plant is closed while improvements are made so until we get news from Jeep, I would NOT believe the salesman.

Lori-

I suppose if you really want to know, call Jeep.

No one knows the answer to your question, except maybe Jeep. They're not in production yet, no one has seen the owner's manual, so no one knows.

It's a totally revamped model. No information from 2012 or earlier applies to the 2013 models, even though people here like to post that info.

If the Jeep dealer service manager says they won't be towable 4-down, then that's the best answer you're going to get until they are actually in production and shipping.

I wouldn't put much faith in the 2nd hand info from some unidentified service manager either. Until we can find some official source for the 2013 Liberty specs, the best that can be said is "don't know yet".

What seems to be known at this point is that the new Liberty is a crossover rather than an SUV and will use a chassis based on a Fiat/AlfaRomeo design. Chrysler calls it the CUSW chassis and it will also be used by the Dodge Dart. That means that anything we knew about the old Liberty does not apply to the new one. So, it's going to have to be "wait and see".

In my personal opinion, the odds for 4-down towability are not good. I would not bet on it.

Go back and look at the link in post #3. The pictures and specs (albeit incomplete) seem to show a warmed over version of the 2012, even with the same old 3.7L engine. Unless that article is completely wrong, it would indicate minor changes from the 2012.

As for the Fiat/Alfa/Dart shared chassis, I thought that applied to the Compass and Patriot not the Liberty. Bottom line is we won't know for sure till they hit the dealers or the owner's manual is posted online.

OK, I spoke too soon. Looks llike there may not be a 2013 Liberty model, unless they sell leftover 2012's as 13's. Here is the real scoop and as Gary pointed out - not promising for the 4-down crowd.

I am towing a 2012 Jeep Liberty 4 down. I don't think they made a 2013. It is 4 wheel drive with a transfer case that can be put in neutral. Steering doesn't lock. Put the transfer case in neutral, transmission in park, and tow away. Very easy.
