2016 Chevy Malibu - Issues with Base Plate Installation

Dear Folks:

I thought I'd relate my experience today. I purchased a brand new 2015 Fleetwood Bounder Classic 34B at LazyDays RV in Loveland, Colorado last Friday. I also purchased a complete tow package to tow our new Chevy Malibu (2016) all four wheels down, which we chose specifically because it is relatively light to tow ( a little over 3k pounds) and is towable even though it's an automatic transmission. The guys at LazyDays said they'd not yet hooked up a 2016 Malibu.

Well, after a number of hours, they came out and said they had ordered the correct base plate, but after getting the car ready to mount it, they found out that the base plate doesn't fit the car. They called the company that manufactured the tow package (sorry, but I don't remember the name of the company, but it's not Blue Ox) and they said that they likely needed to do a whole new base plate (the company said that ours was the first 2016 Malibu that they'd had one of theirs hooked up to). Thus, we got nowhere today.

I'm just relating this story to you in case you are thinking of hooking up a new Malibu. We are bummed because we spent the whole day and got nothing accomplished.

The guys at LazyDays said that, eventually, they will get us a complete tow package worked out (they said they've had it happen before a couple of times). Still, we're bummed because we are going on our first real trip into the mountains for Memorial Day Weekend, and now my wife will have to follow me in the car, rather than ride with me.

Take care all.

Thanks for the heads up on this.
It happens when there's a new model. I've seen Blue Ox install one for free if you're the first and can get to their factory.

Doing a quick check, Only Blue Ox offers a baseplate for the 2016 Malibu. Tell dealer to get one on order now. With adapter for the towbar they are using.

Only 2016 Malibu equipped with a 1.5-liter engine without Active Shutter RPO VRI can be towed four wheels down. TO prevent the battery from draining while vehicle is being towed, remove fuses F10 and F41 from the instrument panel fuse block.

Roadmaster does have two different type brackets in stock for the 2016 Malabu Limited 2.5 and the bracket hook height is 15 inches.
Roadmaster Inc. - Tow Bars, Braking Systems & RV Accessories

BlueOx hookup heigh is 12.5 , that will generally be a little low. BlueOx is for the Limited only also.

Roadmaster only shows base plates for Malibu Limited.
Blue Ox shows base plates for Malibu and Malibu Limited.
Not sure what the difference is. OP needs to state which model and options he has.

You need to go to Blue Ox's Find a Baseplate to see both available 2016 baseplates.

This is the model Malibu that we have. We made sure of this with the Chevy dealer before we took delivery on it.

Thanks for all the help, guys.

Hello Tricker. I am considering buying a Malibu as well and read where it said no to dinghy with the Active Shutters RPO VRI. Any idea how you know if it is on your car? What is it?

Viv from what I read about it it's a active grill shutter in other words it closes the grill off at times to improve fuel mileage and I'm sure it's easy to know it on the car as it will increase the price of the car I'm sure.

Blue Ox BX1715 Blue Ox BasePlate/Brackets
They do list a BX1716 which is for the LS, LT, LT2 and Premier models of the Malibu. the BX1715 is for the Limited model which is a carry over of last year's style.

I'm curious what the final outcome was. We are looking for a new car that can be dinghy towed and the Chevy Malibu is/was at the top of our list. After much research, it looks like ALL 2016 Chevy Malibus come with the active grille shutters as standard equipment. Therefore, our local dealer stated that the 2016 Malibu is NOT towable as a dinghy, regardless of model and engine. Did you successfully get your 2016 Malibu outfitted for dinghy towing?
