2016 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 Shifting

I have a new Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 with the Eco-diesel with 8 shifting position automatic transmission.

  1. My questions is that when (following Manufacture's instructions to flat tow) I shift the transfer case back from neutral to park, there is a clunking noise that occurs. It shifts from 2 wheel drive to neutral with out any noise. Is this a common occurrence and are other Dodge owners experience this?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you

2016 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 Shifting

Why would you be shifting the transfer case at all for towing unless you are off road? You should be towing in 2 wheel drive on hard surface roads.

They are using it as a toad behind a motorhome. Ours used to do that. I believe you put the transfer case in neutral then shift the gear shift to park and you hear the noise . . . normal.

I shut the engine off before switching back to park. That way nothing is moving and I don't get the clunk.

Even in neutral the transmission input shaft is spinning, causing internal gears to move. The noise you hear is the park pawl stopping the gears from turning.

The same thing happens if you try to shift from 4wd high to low in neutral when stopped. At least that is my experience.

I'm assuming you mean you're shifting the TRANSMISSION, not Transfer Case, back to park, correct?

Well Sir,
Not sure about how or what you tow but, about 99.999999% of 4WD trucks are towed with the TRANSFER CASE IN NEUTRAL, not in 2WD. Just to clarify things. By doing that, you disengage all influence the turning wheels/drive shafts will have on the rest of the drive train.
