2016 Explorer TOAD - Disconnect Battery?

I am rigging my 2016 Explorer Platinum to tow 4 Down. I've read the manual and yes, I know that it says to disconnect the negative battery cable but I've also read that this is not really necessary. Has anyone gotten any definitive information on this and, more importantly, WHY this is necessary?

Thanks all!

In my 17 Edge the ps pump is electric as is the way the transmission shifts and my parking brake operates and I don't know what else. Reason enough fo me.

I have a friend who tows a 2016 Explorer Sport. He is supposed to disconnect the battery, but he doesn't. He has arrived with a dead battery a few times. But he carries a portable jump starter and uses that if he can't start the car. He hasn't had any other problems so far.
I tow a 2018 Edge SEL. I do disconnect the battery like Ford says to. I called Ford and they told me I needed to disconnect the battery to protect the transmission. Ergo, i disconnect the battery. The only side effect is that the check engine light comes on when I reconnect. But it goes out after a few short drives.

Cant speak to your Ford, but my Chevy Colorado has the same requirement. The reason is the electric power steering, and not doing the battery disconnect can result in power steering issues.
