2016 Subarus

I just received my 2016 dinghy towing guide from motorhome magazine and noticed that Subaru is no longer listed as a towable. Their manual transmissions have always been towable. Can anyone shed any light on this ? Have always looked at the Subaru as my next option , but now I am not sure which way to go.

Thanks in advance.

Funny thing...I was at my Subi dealer yesterday, minor warranty stuff. Asked the service boss about the dropping of Subi's from the towing list (had my new one, 2016, and 2015 issue with me)
He was aware of Subi recommending no manual Subi's be towed 4 down, but could not explain why.
We tow a 3013 Subi Crosstrek, which we'll be keeping for a loooong time.

It appears that Subaru has limited "toad options" to only 3:
1.) Dolly towing a 2016 Subaru
2.) Trailer towing a 2016 Subaru
3.) Thousands of towable cars and trucks (including pre 2016 Subaru that are towable).

Not according to the FMCA tow guide, they are showing 6 Subarus towable for 2016 in the manual trans only. The FMCA ( John Johnson ) will not show any toad as towable without approval from the auto company?

Absolutely false. No Subaru can be towed with a dolly and either the front or rear wheels on the ground. Even the 2016 Subaru owner's manuals say Subarus with manual transmissions can be towed with all four wheels on the ground with no speed or distance restrictions.

Methinks any Subaru, (and/or any other make of car/truck). who's owners manual says it can it be towed "with all four wheels on the ground", CAN ALSO be towed with a dolly.

I've had 2 manual transmission Subarus. These are all wheel drive vehicles with a center differential - my cars had a viscous coupling in the center differential which would try to lock up if towed on a dolly. Not something you want to mess with by running the rear wheels at speed while the front wheels are not spinning.

Sorry Mel Jackfish is correct 4 WD toads can't be towed on a dolly.

I won't tow a 4 wheel drive toad on a dolly.
Thanks

I've had some 4WD / AWD vehicles with transfer cases that had a true neutral position. At least one of them (my 2015 Sierra 1500) can definitely be towed with a dolly. I don't have the manuals for my old Grand Cherokee or Durangos.

I believe that the 2016 Forrester is available with a MANUAL transmission and it is towable four down.

I believe that the 2016 Outback is only available with an AUTOMATIC transmission and is NOT towable four down.

Those two beliefs are based on my opinion and understanding. Before you buy a 2016 Subaru and start towing it around, please check with someone more reliable than I.

My 2010 Outback with a MANUAL transmission tows very nicely four down.

My owner's manual clearly states that it must be towed either four down or all four wheels on a trailer. Do NOT tow it with only two wheels on the ground.

Take care,
Stu
