2017 e-Golf

It appears that I can only tow a 2017 VW e-Golf on a car trailer, but I thought I’d ask - is there any way to tow it on a dolly?

Why do you think the e Golf can only be towed on a trailer?

I am familiar with most VW products but unfortunately do not have any knowledge of the eGolf. For what it is worth, I flat tow a 2014 Jetta Sportwagen TDI with manual transmission. .

If the rear axle is identical to a regular Golf, you should be able to dolly tow it.

If the eGolf is AWD or they incorporate some form of regenerative braking in the rear wheels then it may not be dolly towable.

I would talk to a VW technician and determine if there is a mechanical reason that would prohibit dolly towing. Talk to the guy in the shop, the people up front will give you a corporate position or policy that may not be based on a technical reason.

The e-Golf is a one speed automatic with an electronic gear selector, and has an electronic handbrake, as well as a bunch of nanny safety lockouts if you try to do anything out of the ordinary.

Technically if you can keep the handbrake off, the rear wheels have no motor attached and should spin freely. It’s just a question of whether the car will even allow you to do that.

I think this issue will become more and more common even in ICE vehicles.

The electro/mechanical actuator for the parking brake is probably easy to defeat but doing so would surely send a fault code to the VCDS. Not sure if you would need to clear the fault code when you enabled the actuator for proper function or the code would just remain in the history.

Do a search for Vag-Com or VCDS. The guys that work on or tinker with Audi/VW control and diagnostic systems have several forums. They may have the answer or take the problem on as a challenge.
