2017 GMC Canyon towing

Sorry, couldnt find anything on towing a 2017 canyon pickup so any information helps. I do know you have to have the V6 or diesel and four wheel drive. Just wanting to know any experiences good or bad towing this vehicle.

There is a long thread on towing the 2015 and newer Colorado/Canyons in the Toad Forum. Not a lot has changed since 2015, there is a lot of good information in it. They make great toads. I bought my 2015 in Nov 2014. Blue Ox did the install on the towing system and lights free and I installed the aux braking system. I have towed it 35,000 miles with no issues. You are correct it must have 4 wheel drive with a neutral position on the transfer case. You also have to install a battery disconnect due to the electric power steering. Good luck.

I just set up my 18 Canyon diesel (thanks again Dutch Star Don and Vato)and it tows great. There’s a couple more steps than my Jeep to get it into towing mode, but it’s still a simple operation. The battery needs to be disconnected, but surprisingly the radio doesn’t lose its memory. Im very happy with it so far.

Hi Exgman,
I just bought a 2017 GMC Canyon diesel and will be setting it up for flat towing. I know that the battery needs to be disconnected. Did you install some type of battery disconnect on your truck? Since it's a diesel I'm concerned about the additional amps needed for starting and want to make sure that I get a battery disconnect switch that can handle the additional amperage.

Thanks

I tow a 2018 Canyon 4 wheel drive (gas). It tows great and hooks up/disconnects quickly!
I tow with a 2017 Fleetwood Bounder Gas 33C
I had the following installed:
Blue OX tow bar & Base plate
SMI Stay & Play Duo Brake System( located under radiator reservoir under hood)
I did not feel like lifting the hood to do a manual battery disconnect so I had this installed:http://www.roadmasterinc.com/product...ery_disconnect

Now I just push a button on my lower left dash and all power is cut off, nice and easy!

That disconnect works great for the Canyon gas, but Roadmaster says it will not work for the diesel.

As "exgman" stated, you can use the electronic disconnect on the gas tricks, but the diesels draw too many amps, requiring the manual type. I know they make some heavy duty solenoids for motor home battery charging and I don't know why Roadmaster doesn't offer a more robust one.

Check the RoadMaster Vehicle application chart. RM recommends their part 766 for the Colly and Canyon, no caveat for diesel

I know it notes "not for diesel" but if you check their application chart special application foot notes it does not exclude the Canyon/Colorado diesel

However, the 2500 and 3500 are listed as "Not for the diesel"

I send an email to RM for clarification

http://www.roadmasterinc.com/pdf/veh...components.pdf

When I got my Canyon, a couple of years ago, I saw the notice on the RM power disconnect regarding not using it on the diesel

Frankly, I had a feeling that caveat was regarding the full size diesels not the 2.8l

The 2.8l was not available when that notice was written

Although I have never taken the time to check the amps required for the 2.8l compared to that of the gas motor and what the power disconnect will handle I may try one

For now I have this manual do-hicky from Amazon

2016 Chevy Colorado

I tow a 2016 Colorado 4x4 without issue. I installed the baseplate and wiring myself, purchased from etrailer.com, followed their video with success. I am wondering if there is a way to connect the truck tire monitoring system to the rv.
