2018 Hyundai Elantra GT Sport

We have been interested in buying a 2018 Elantra GT Sport but have run up against dealers telling us it isn't towable. Yet, I see no reason why it shouldn't be provided it is a manual transmission. We are aware that Blue Ox has designed a baseplate for this vehicle, it was just released to the market this spring. Yet, we don't want to jump into a purchase if we aren't able to verify that the manufacturer agrees it is towable. Has anyone else run into this? Thanks for any insight you may have.

Hi ! Welcome to IRV2! We're sure glad you joined the gang!

I would think that if it's towable then instructions for towing would be in the owner's manual?

Good luck, happy trails, and God bless!

Yes the 6 speed manual can be towed 4 down and that is a beautiful car, ther was a post on this car a while back anyway go here for info on toads.

To tow I think you will have to mash the start button without mashing the brake or gas pedal and will probaly need a charge line to toad battery.

Believe the manual tranny model is towable. I have read that to install the tow plate to the front of the car requires removal of the bottom horizontal grill slat.

Elantra Toad

Most manual trans cars are towable, however, the warranty may be void if they see the baseplate. As with my Mini Cooper and Blue-Ox baseplate. Check your warranty.

Get the car's manual and start reading. What you are looking for is a section marked Towing Behind a Motorhome or Recreational Towing. If Hyundai says it can be towed, then go ahead. If the manual says it can't be towed then you will have no warranty coverage if you go ahead.

Actually you won’t find recreational towing in the manuals.

They leave it out for some reason.

Have to get in touch with Hyundai and get a copy of the technical note they have for them towing 4 down.

It is also a faq on the owners site - basically two wheel drive and standard then towable.

Just had my new 18 Elantra sport all setup and it ties great.
