2019 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk

Looking to buy a 2019 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk. Just confirmed with Jeep that the flat tow wiring kit is not required. However, in the owner's manual it states an obvious fact "Do not tow backwards" or damage will be incurred in the drivetrain. I asked jeep if that meant I could not back up a short distance while still hooked up to my motorhome. Jeep says do NOT back up. Anyone else looked into this? Been towing a 2005 Liberty for over 200,000 miles and back up on occasion to make a turn. No noticeable damage to date. Just curious (plus don't want to destroy a new vehicle).

I have a 2016 Cherokee and if you back up more than 5 yo 6 feet, the front wheels lock over hard to either direction. Gets real ugly real fast when things bind up. Don't think the drive-train is harmed, but could do damage to the front steering linkage or CV joints.

I think what they are referring to is not to tow the vehicle with the rear wheels off the ground using a tow truck or a dolly, which may well mean not to tow it backwards 4 down either.

I would doubt it has anything to do with backing up a few feet if you are towing 4 down (given all the known challenges to that....). Think about it, if you hook up on any sort of incline, when you put the drive train in tow mode, the Jeep rolls backward (just fine) a foot or so until the tow bars stop it.
