2020 Ford Explorer

Just read the info about the new 2020 Ford Explorer coming out this summer. Revealed at Autoshow in Jan. Car and Driver has nice article on it and Ford website as well. While not a heavy hauler (towing capacity of about 5,600), it will be interesting to see if it will be possible to tow 4 down in the 4 wheel drive version. If it is, it could be a big winner for the motor home crowd looking for a new dingy with three row seating.

That is exactly why I have a 2004 Ford Explorer.

4WD with neutral in transfer case for use as a Toad.
REAL 4WD for minor offroading.
V8 with tow package to tow my 24 ft boat when at home.
Three row of seats that fit adults.

Hard to find that combination.

While new Explorer is not exactly like mine, it should fit a few needs.

thx Dale

The Dodge Durango with 4 wheel drive/transfer case with hemi is about only option for three row seats, towing capacity of 8,700 lbs and no speed limit restrictions for four down towing (unless you want to go to Tahoe or Explorer size vehicle. I have Jeep Grand Cherokee that I love but no three row seats.

True as well as Chev Traverse. With a couple more conditions. Max 65 mph and run engine at beginning of day and fuel stops. I like being able to put transfer case not neutral as not worrying about transmission.

I’m pretty excited to see them go back to a RWD based platform. My brother is a manager at a Ford dealer and was showing me the details. It shares a lot of architecture with the new Ranger so it’s an upgrade from the current models in my opinion.

According to the dealer who was looking at the Ford information, the new 2020 Ford Explorer can not be flat towed or towed on a dolly. Bummer. Read Ford manual yourself before making a final decision.

2020 Ford Explorer

Well, the wait is over. Really looking forward to updating to a ST but according to the manual which I just found online, I better go pick up a ‘19 Sport.
Sad..........
