2WD Suburban Toad Transmission Wear
After my Jeep was stolen, I decided to tow my 2003 2WD Suburban. I had a Remco auxiliary trans pump installed. After about 20,000 miles, I started noticing a noise in 1st gear. The trans guy said a thrust bearing had failed, and since I had 115,000 miles on the car, I figured wear and tear, and had the transmission overhauled. (There was no sign of poor lubrication). After another 20,000 miles, I heard the 1st gear noise again. The mechanic opened it up and said another thrust bearing on the same shaft had failed (no lube problem.) Both bearings showed wear, but no heat damage. The mechanic is puzzled by the cause, but made some adjustments to try to compensate. The cause is still a guess. I suspect that towing the Suburban puts unusual stress on the transmission thrust bearings, even though the lube pump is working properly.
Has anyone else had similar problems? Does anyone have a good guess as to the possible cause?
