I have a 32k GVWR motorhome that is currently at 30k lbs. My GCWR is 42k. I will be towing a 10k GVWR trailer with 8.5k lbs actual total weight. So, a total weight of 38.5k lbs of a possible 42k lbs.
The hitch on MH is 10k, and loaded trailer tongue weight is 800-950 lbs, so, I am within limits.
I want to know if I should be using an Equalizer hitch with anti sway control? Just an anti sway device? Or neither?
I owned almost the exact same rig about 10 years ago, and it towed fine. But in that case, the trailer was already outfitted with an equalizer hitch and anti sway. But now with this new combination, I would really like to know if this is really necessary?
I have towed this trailer for short distances, maybe 15-20 miles at slow speeds, and it towed fine. I guess I am asking if there is a rule of thumb for when equalizer/anti sway hitches are necessary. Like if the trailer weighs more than 50% of the tow vehicle, use one. And if it weighs less than 50%, it is not needed.
Can anyone who has a similar rig give me some direction?
Thanks
