For Jeeps of that vintage there are three drive system options

This is for automatic shift only;, Stick shift I did not read the limits on:

One is Rear Wheel Drive: May not be towed 4 down

4WD has two different transfer cases,, I forget how to tell them apart

one can not be towed 4 down (sorry).

The other, can be towed 4 down UNLESS, you have locking hubs on the front and they are not locked (With manual locking hubs, locked, it can be towed 4 down, with straight hubs it can be towed 4 down, but with automatic locking hubs or manual, not locked, it can not be towed 4 down)

To tow, place transfer case in neutral. Leave ignition in the OFF but not locked position so wheel can turn.. That's about all there is to it..

Do not forget a towed brake system (Ready brake, M&G, US-Gear, avoid the pedal pushing boxes in the driver's seat) and tow lights.

I have a 1990 Cherokee. Makes a great Toad!

Yes, it MUST be a 4WD version to tow 4-down, both auto and manual trans OK. Either version transfer case works fine. wa8yxm must be thinking of the Grand Cherokee which had a non-towable transfer case (as well as a towable version). There were no manual locking hubs used from the factory, so as long as it is a 4WD model, you are golden. Transfer case placed in neutral, transmission in Park (or any gear for manual), ignition key turned one click only to unlock the steering wheel and parking brake off.
X100 on the braking system.
