We have towed a 1972 VW Bug for 5 years now. about 30,000 miles, no problems yet. Had alignment done and new steering damper installed. I never know it's back there.

We have towed several Beetles over the years and found them excellent. We started with a 62 and finally finished with a 74. They are light and follow very nicely.

They have an additional benefit of being light enough that the auxiliary braking for a towed may not be necessary but optional.

The only problem I see with towing a original style beetle is the Odometer cable is connected to the front wheel center cap that covers the nut holding the brake drum on the spindle. Unless you want to disconnect this at the back of the speedometer, you will accumulate miles on the bug while in tow.

Anyone towed an auto-stick Beetle? Can't seem to get an agreement on the process. One side says just put her in neutral and tow away. The other side says disconnect the shafts so nothing is spinning off the wheels.

Thanks for any input/advise.

1974 Super Beetle auto-stick.
