A Heavy Toad

We have gotten down to selecting the right toad. We need to tow something that will itself tow a 7500# boat for short distances when detached from the DP, and can be towed flat. Would rather not have to disconnect drive shafts, and 4WD is OK. Tough set of criteria, but that's what we need. I have 2WD F-150 and 4WD F-250 available, and fear that something that heavy will be required. Suggestions?

A new F150 can tow over 11 K and can be towed four down. Must be a 4X4 to tow four down.

4x4 (to get the neutral position in the transfer case) for starters, but there are some 4x4 AWD systems that will trip you up even with one of those. It really does depend on the truck/SUV. You need to get into the owners manuals to verify!

In order to tow 7500 lb you are pretty much limited to a full-size pickup or SUV (1/2 ton with the right equipment or 3/4 ton). Most 2WD pickups and SUVs are not towable 4-down. Most full-time 4WD and some AWD drive vehicles can not be towed 4-down without modification. You will need to get a vehicle with 4WD that has a transfer case that can be put into neutral.
