I'm here at the Newmar International Rally and just had the pleasure of dealing with Pete from SMI as he installed an Air Force One on my H3.
Here are a few pics....
First the front of the H3....
Now on the back of the coach....

The install was pretty painless and includes an LED light on the dash to alert me when the toad brakes are working....
Pete demonstrated the system and I was amazed with the power that is exhibited at the pedal of the toad.

Bob, I have been reading that SMI is a new sponser of the IRV2 forum. Are they coming to the Branson rally later this month and will they be doing any installs?
A while back I recommended the Air Force One system for a friend's new motorhome as the auxillary braking system, but have yet to do my own system as there is no one here locally who does their installation.

Are there any other attendees that would consider installing an SMI system?
I also asked Pete to make arrangements to give a seminar - so at this late date - perhaps we can work that out once arrived at the rally.
Please support our forum sponsor SMI Manufacturing by coming out and attending the SMI seminar.

Bob:
I've considered the AF1 but wasn't sure how hard it would be to install the thing under the hood on my Explorer. If he attends the rally, I may just get one, especially if he will do the installation. I'd really like to have proportional braking and jettison the Apollo.

Bob:
Also while you were having the Air Force One installed, did you give any consideration to the cautionary language Spartan gives on utilizing their auxillary air compressor when tapping into the coach air system lines?
While I was not at the seminars given by Spartan, I have had reports that Spartan is dubious about the ramifications of tapping into air lines without the proper system safeguards. I think their additional tank/compressor is approximatey another $300, but it might be worth the expediture if coach braking integrity is maintained. Have you heard any of this discussion?

Chuck, after Peter had read your post he called me and I got him in touch with DriVer to get his opinion on attendees...Sounds promising that one of the SMI teams might be in attendance...
To answer your second question regarding Spartan's opinion, I spoke with Pete at length.
Spartan "blesses" the SMI Air Force One as long as you use "their" check valve....According to Pete,(help me out Pete?), the techs at SMI actually tap into the TAG air which is totally separate from the drive axle braking air,so there's no affect on coach brakes.
After having dealt with Pete and SMI on the Silent Partner, I am one hundred percent confident in his findings...

Bob,
How would the SMI tap into a coach without a tag axle "safely" ?

Ed, this has been an issue that Spartan has their panties in a wad about...Spartan will supply you with their "check valve" for this procedure and when I spoke to Pete IRT their check valve, Pete said he and Spartan have been having a dialogue about this. SMI used their own "check valve" on my coach...
As I know Pete monitors this forum, let's see if he'll weigh in...

Forgot to mention some statistics I heard from Pete of SMI regarding the show here in Gillette.
SMI sold 19 Air Force Ones and a bunch of Stay in Plays...

That would be great if they come to the rally. I don't need an instal, but they could check over my Silent Partner unit and make sure everything is ok.
