Does anyone have any experience with successfully flat towing a 1999 Toyota Tacoma 5 speed manual shift?

I tow a '99 Toyota 4Runner all over hill and dale all over this country. I use all Roadmaster tow equipment including an air powered supplemental brake activation system. Works very well.

Is your 4Runner manual transmission? Is it 4 wheel drive?

Towed a 98 4WD manual.
Put key in Acc so the steering wheel won't lock (forgot that once, you'll feel the coach pull to one side as the toad tries to steer you from behind), stick in Neutral, emergency brake Off. Go like the wind.

Monty,

How is the frame on that 99 Tacoma? My son had one for seven years and the frame rusted right through. Fortunately, a friend remembered that Toyota had a program where they bought the truck back if it had a 'rust perforated frame'. We took his truck in and they would not return it saying it was unsafe to drive. Luckily, they gave us a VERY fair price - more than we paid for it used!

You probably don't have the road salt and rust that we have in the NE, but I wanted to make sure you were aware of this issue. Here is a link with more info:

Info on the 1995.5 through 2004 Toyota Tacoma frame recall for rust

Applevalley2,

We have a 99 tacoma 2 wheel drive. I checked years ago and It's not towable without a drive shaft disconnect. Expensive and that truck is no lightweight. So we bought a used wrangler. Love it.

I appreciate the info. I kind of suspected this might be the case. Thanks
