I am towing an 01 cherokee now and thinking of upgrading. I've found a 2009 Grand Cherokee overland 4x4, which is the loaded model one step below the SRT8. I was wondering how the steering lock works since the vehicle doesn't use a standard type key. Is the steering lock electronic or does it not have a steering lock? Also any other oddities that I should know. I use a blue ox tow bar with an M&G brake.

Thanks,
Tommy

Tommy, Grab the owner's manual out of the glove box and take a look at the requirements for flat 4 towing. It'll be in there if it can be done!

Call owner or customer support at Jeep and they will have immediately have he answer for you.

Tommy, I tow a 2008 Grand Cherokee Overland. There is no steering lock. All I do is put the transfer case in neutral, shift the transmission into Park, release the parking brake and tow. Driver is right, you should read the owners manual first to make sure how to put the transfer case into neutral.

Thanks for the quick reply guys. I was curious about the steering with the plastic key. My wife's 09 Charger Daytona uses the same type key. I was aware of the need for it to be a qaudra-tracII transfer case and the process for putting the transfer case in neutral.

Sammie do you have any complaints with the grand cherokee model?

Tommy, I have put 20,000 miles on it so far and really love it. The only thing I've had it back to the dealer for was a bad electrical module that controlled the dash warning lights. It was taken care of under warrenty and I was able to drive it when it went bad. It tows so well that if I didn't have a rearview monitor in the motorhome I wouldn't know it was back there.

We have a 2010 Grand Cherokee Limited with the Quadra Drive II. With ours, the key is removed after you have the transfer case in neutral. It may vary by transfer case.
