Beetle as towed?

We are looking for a 2010-12 VW Beetle convertible as our towed. Any thoughts as to tow ability and does anyone have one for sale?

Check out the Motorhomes Dingy Towing Guide. It lists most all of the cars and pickups that can be towed four down and what, if any, additional accessories might be needed.

My BIL tows his 2002 VW bug. Standard shift. I helped him install the baseplates on the front and recommend you take it somewhere. It was a royal PITA. Tows fine though.

I looked at FMCA's towing guides for 2010, '11, & '12 and also Trailer Life's Dingy Guides for 2011 and 2012. I did not see ANY Volkswagen vehicles listed in any of the publications as being towable 4 wheels down. That being said, as I typed this I thought "Blue Ox", so off I went to there webpage. Sure enough Blue Ox DOES list a base plate for the 2012 Beetle, but NOT for 2010 or 2011. The only way to confirm 4 wheel down tow ability is to check the owners manual for the specific vehicle. There is always the tow dolly or full trailer option, if ya gotta have the Beetle Ragtop.

KAMPURR,
Volkswagen of America does NOT authorize, ANY of its fleet to be flat towed and hasn't for quite some time. I have looked in almost all of my Dinghy Towing guides and can't find any that show a VW as authorized to be flat towed.

Now, with that being said, I've had two VW Beetles, the TDI models. One, an '03 and the other, an '04. Both were 5-speed sticks. I loved both of those cars. Neither one ever dropped below 42 mpg. I'd have one in a heart beat for a toad if we didn't have to use our truck to carry our motorcycle when towing.

I have talked with many guys in campgrounds and RV parks who've pulled in with late model VWs in tow. In discussion, about 90% of them went to a local dealership for VW and by-passed the service writer and went directly to the transmission tech. Just about every one of those techs told these folks that, you can tow a stick version and there will be NO detrimental effects. But, they also told these people, that they, (the techs) cannot put it in writing because of VOA's rules and regulations on towing their vehicles.

All of the nice folks I've spoken with in various campgrounds and RV parks who've towed these late model VWs, have had absolutely great results. Not one has had any tow issues what so ever. Your choice.

I have a 2000 TDI Beetle 5 speed as a toad. VW says the 6-speed manual CANNOT be towed 4 down, but many are doing it. If you buy a car old enough to be out of warranty, I'd give it a try.

Okay, I dug out the owners manual for my 2001 New Beetle last night and it states "The referred method for towing is front end raised or on a dolly, but it can be flat towed as well." It also advised to make sure that the transmission fluid does not leak or drain out.

Just thought I would add my 2 cents.

Is your '01 Beetle automatic or 5 speed stick shift?

it's a 5 speed manual tranny, stick shift.

And I meant to type "Preferred", not referred.

BFlinn, we have a gulfstream as well, though it is a class C. We have yet to tow with it, we are just getting the Bug and RV fitted for everything.
