Brand new to motorhome, what is best vehicle that is tow ready?

The best vehicle that is tow ready is a second hand dingy that already has all the mods and gear already installed.

The next best is virtually any front wheel drive car, van, or SUV on a dolly...no modifications needed to the car, there's brakes and lights already on the dolly, and you can swap cars at will in the future.

After that...best luck.

My suggestion would be to think more about what is important to YOU and how you will use it.
I wouldn't have a toad on a dolly but it may be perfect for some... depends on what is important to you.

There are lots of threads on pros & cons of trailer vs dolly vs 4 down so won't repeat myself.

Think about what bedt means to you... cheapest...easiest to hook / unhook...widest selection of toads...max wt...etc

Honda CRVs 2014 & prior and Jeeps are very popular 4 down...many others work.
Dolly more options but generally can't be AWD or RWD.

Your question covers lots of territory! I would never use a tow dolly. We love Honda vehicles and most all can be flat towed through 2014. We love our 2013 CRV AWD!

Best is best...cost, ease, and function are some of the things make-up users needs.

The OP is surely looking for suggestions on models that will not grenade if towed and the old CRV (not a new one ) and Jeep are always first on the list. But that demonstrates how the list of flat towable cars is getting shorter and shorter each year.

I have done both flat and dolly tow and know first hand the rather large expense and scope of modifications needed to get any car ready for four-down towing.

Join the FMCA (Family Motor Coach Association) and look at their towing guide online. It's organized by model year, manufacturer and model.

Find a vehicle you like and then look it up, some vehicles have restrictions, others are more simple, the guide is very helpful.

"Best" anything is an invitation to get everyone's opinion on what they bought and think is "best". But when I looked at the towed vehicles I saw on the road, what I saw being towed most often was the venerable Jeep Wrangler.

Research quickly revealed the reason: Recent model Wranglers require none of the transmission pumps, driveline disconnects, steering column lock interventions...none of that stuff. They're designed to be towed.

Tow a Wrangler (NOT a Grand Cherokee with the electronic steering issues), and just hook up, and tow.

What will you use the toad for? Just going to dinner and shopping. Or will you need something for off road use, fishing, kayaking, spots, etc. The best vehicle is defined how it will be used, then which one would be the easiest to tow.

My needs are for a pickup truck, so that is the best for me. 4 wheel drive so we can go off road wildlife viewing and luxury so we can go to dinner in comfort.

All I can offer is my reasoning for my present toad, 2015 Chevrolet Colorado 4X4.
My toad has to be my daily drive.
Must be towable 4 down.
Has to be a truck, we fish a lot and carry a lot of gear. Also I love trucks.
Has to be a 4X4. Some of the places we fish 4 wheel drive is a must.
Must seat at least 4.
Must have automatic transmission.
Must weigh less than 5,000 lbs. Colorado barely does.
At the time in late 2014 the new 2015 Colorado/Canyon was the only vehicle that met those requirements.
I like jeeps but a 4 door jeep will not carry all of our gear and 4 people. And it is not a truck.
Determine what you will use the toad for when not actually towing. There is no "best" toad.

You can put in any vehicle and the Remco site will tell you if it is towable and, if not, what can be done to make it towable.

We love 4 down towing our 2014 Honda CRV. This is the last year you can tow 4 down. Jeeps are another good option.

What do you mean that this is the last year you can tow four down? Please clarify. I havent heard anything about this, and we are in the process of setting up a toad for 4-down!
