Is it ok to insert a bike rack hitch between the coach and the toad's tow bar? I have seen these bike rack/hitch exteners with a trailer attached but I have not seen one used with a toad.

I have never seen one for a tow bar, usually on a dolly. I simply put a bike rack on the back of my toad. No sweat.

Big Red, not exactly sure of what you are saying. However, Northern Tool sells an over-under dual receiver that fits into MH receiver and then bike rack fits into top of the over-under and tow bar or dolly is accomodsated by lower part. Mine costs about $48 with S/H and worked just fine. I now tow a 20' enclosed trailer for car, bikes, etc., Ken...

I guess I wasn't clear. The bike rack is basically a 2" receiver extension with a rack welded to it. When you attach the rack to the MH's reciever, you still have a 2" receiver to use for towing. I just don't know if enyone has applied this type of bike rack with a tow bar.

Below is the over under dual hitch extension that Ken is talking about. I think it will work just fine. My only concern is the stresses on the tow system for the toad. The coach has a 5,000# hitch and this hitch extension is only rated at 4000#. Don't want anything to break in transit.

To; Big redlancer;
I currently have a hitch-haul platform welded to a 2" receiver extension, holds 3 bikes and is great when doing work on rear diesel engine, a lot closer, less stretching.
You have to be careful because this extends length between motorhome and toad.
J. C. Whitney. com has a variety of racks, receivers custom fit for many vehicles.
Give them a look Good luck
Thanks========AJBJRVERS

Biggest issue with any sort of extension is that it derates the hitch, both in capacity and tongue load.
For example a 12" extension will derate a hitch by 30%. If I used one my 5000/500 (capacity/tongue) hitch would become a 3333/333 lb hitch. Tongue weight is not a problem with my Wrangler, but it weighs near 3900 lbs. So the extension would be a no no.
Depending on how much BigRedLancer's Saturn weighs the bike rack hitch may not work. Based on his signature I bet he has a 5000 lb hitch.
From what I have been able to glean, a 12" extension derates the hitch by 30%, the 18" by 50%.

I don't have a receiver on the saturn (normal) and I really didn't want to buy yet another bike rack but that may be my only alternative.

I fold the back seat down and place the bikes in the trunk of my Civic. Keeps them nice and clean and no rust or theft.

I have two mountain bikes and I don't think they will fit in the Saturn.
