Black soot on toad???

Is it common for your toad to end up nasty?

This is our first trip out with our Pontiac G6 toad and the passenger side is completely coated with black soot diesely (??) deposits. I have the Cummins ISC 360hp engine. My exhaust pipe exits at a 45deg. angle toward the ground.

Just finished a 625 mile haul and our white car is black on one side.

No, it is not common. I can think of a couple possibilities:
(1) Crankcase was overfilled with oil and the extra got thrown out.
(2) The crankcase oil vent, aka "slobber tube" is venting oil and fumes that get sucked into the fan 9rar radiator like yours) and blown onto the toad. An extension on the tube may help
(3) Oil or diesel fuel in the exhaust (if on the same side as the exhaust pipe). Not good - need professional help!

We have a similar problem if you refer to powdery soot as opposed to oil. After a few hundred miles there is a light layer of soot which in most cases will wipe off especially on a waxed surface.
OTR trucks experience the same problem.
Many shippers will require a "smoke tarp" be installed over their flatbed freight to prevent this.

The deposits are kinda like you would have a drop of diesel and then the soot would blow over it. It washed right off with a trip through a brushless car wash.

Just my opinion, but a properly running engine won't emit soot or diesel fuel. The exhaust is plenty far away to prevent any build-up on the toad.

I have several friends who have DP's and all of them complain of diesel soot on the towed vehicle, in most case that I am refering to, it is boats.
All over the cover, inside the boat, all over the seats and such. The outside of the boat is the hardest to clean, as it gets rubbed in by the travel cover. takes a full waxing on each trip for most. And, the cover gets just as black.

My latest attempt to try to combat this is to install a 6" stack up the left side of the coach, up and over the top of the coach. ( this one is a 2000 Country Coach Intrigue)
The last one I tried to "fix" was a 2002 Discovery. that attempt did not work. It was to extend the pipe out to one side of the coach, instead of out the back as from the factory.

Ideally you would need an exhaust pipe that would extend out past the end of the trailer. ( I am working on that concept too).

Is this really a wide spread problem? There is not a spec of soot on our toad (30k miles towing), nor have I noticed it on friend's toads.

Check your air filter as if it is dirty you will throw out more soot/smoke.

Update....

Found dirty air filter and fuel filters. Hope this is the problem. Just changed all fluids and filters and leaving 7/9/10 for a 3000 mile trip. Should know if that was it pretty soon.

I'm pretty sure it was due to the air filter. Mine was dirty when I bought the coach and drove it back. I noticed a lot of black smoke (soot) and after I had the filter changed very little black.
