Is it mandatory to use the toad brake for short flat trips?

It is all dependent on state law and weight of toad. This link may help Towing Guides - Lichtsinn Motors - Forest City Iowa Dealer

Based off weight, not road type.

If you have a toad brake system, use it always. If you don't, get one.

If required, the distance traveled or terrain traversed does not matter.

I had a Blue Ox brake system and that is the last one I would ever own. Much better brands on the market. When my Blue Ox failed and burnt the front brakes out on the toad......Blue Ox reply was.."oh we don't manufacture that system anymore." What about the $1,200 dollars I paid for it....answer, we had a lot of problems with that unit. No trade in nothing. I moved on to a Ready Brake and couldn't be happier.

Look at any other brand except a Blue Ox, just my experience.

That's not something I would be proud of.

If by short trip, you mean to the end of your driveway, or you have a crystal ball and are 1000% sure that you will not have an accident or that somebody won't cut you off, then by all means, leave it out or off. Unfortunately, we don't get the luxury of knowing when something is going to happen. If you get into an accident, and your state requires an auxilary brake on your toad, and it isn't there, you may as well paint a bullseye on your back. The lawyers will be standing in line to take that case.

This topic has been discussed over and over and over again. If your state requires it, put it in. IMHO, if your state doesn't require it, put it in anyway.

If I got into an accident and somebody got hurt because I couldn't stop in time, regardless of the state law, that's not a burden I want to carry.
