Blue Ox Aladdin Towbar Rating change Date

Does anyone know when Blue Ox changed the BX4325 Aladdin Towbar rating from 5000 lbs to 7500 lbs? I have a used Aladdin 5000 lb towbar and was trying to determine its approximate age.

If no one here can answer a call to BO would probably get a quick answer.

Approximately 5 years ago. That's when we bought ours, rated 7,500 lbs. They had just made the change.

The Blue Ox web site for that model tow bar has this statement:

Units shipped before 1/1/11 rated at 5,000lbs.

It is usually written on it. I had one and it said 7,500lbs on the tow bar.

The question was when did they make the change. He knows he has a 5,000 lb tow bar.

Anyone know what they changed? My 5000 pound rated Aladdin has been great for my 2500 pound car. Looking at towing my 49XX pound truck now. Be nice to know what the weak link is and maybe do an upgrade.

The obvious difference is the part that slides into the receiver hitch. 5,000 lb models were aluminum, 7,500 lb is steel. That includes the swivel portion that the arms attach to. You can buy that piece for a little over $200.

I know at some point they also changed the triple lugs that attach to the base plate inserts. The newer ones the arms attach to the arms off center towards center of vehicle. Older ones attach to arms in the center of the lug. Don't know if that was part of the upgrade to 7,500 lb or not.

Hmmm, mine already has a steel piece on the front. I know it's older, but maybe it was upgraded some at some point. I'll have to look at some pictures and at mine closely.

Well I'm sure you can tell the difference between steel and aluminum. Someone may have replaced it. Maybe to get a shorter or longer insert, BlueOx does make them.

The original Aladdin's had an Aluminum stinger (the part that slides into the receiver) and that was way, way, way before they changed the rating. I've been a BO dealer for 18+ years and the aluminum stinger would wobble out and needed to be replaced with a steel stinger. Honestly can't remember if it was done under warranty or not. A few years ago BO decided to include the safety cables with the bar, at that time is when the ratings changed. I honestly couldn't tell any difference with the prior 5k rated bar and the 7.5k bar, IMO the only thing that changed was the rating... I always call it a marketing scheme. IMO they did what they needed to fill the line-up and have bars rated at the weights that work best for sales. Yes I have and use all of their bars, I use the Aladdin the most as it's the lightest to pack around, but I sell the Alpha the most as it's the perfect bar for weight rating & cost for most.

Good info Jim. I was comparing my 7,500 lb Aladdin to my uncle's 5,000 lb and assumed the switch to steel was part of the 7,500 lb upgrade.

Yes, thanks Jim. I'll definitely give mine a once over, but I'll feel fine pulling a 5000 pound truck with a 5000 bar that might just handle a 7500 vehicle.
