I tow a Jeep Wrangler, which weighs more than your Focus, and like you I didn't think I had any problems braking with it before I had a brake system installed. However, I decided to have a brake system installed just for peace of mind. In an emergency stop, I figure it could be the difference between an accident and no accident.
I went with a system by M&G Engineering which ties the toad's brakes in with the air brake system on the coach. So far I've been very impressed at how well it works, and like I said, I now have more peace of mind knowing that I'm in compliance with the law in all states, plus I know I'm being as safe as possible.
