Blue Ox base plate instructions Honda CRV

I just installed the Blue Ox base plate on a 2014 Honda CR-V and found what I think is a very serious misdirection on the installation instructions. These instructions also apply to 2012 and 2013 models. Specifically, I am referring to step number 8 in the removal of the fascia. Blue Ox want you to remove four yellow clips that secure the grille to the fascia. These clips are virtually impossible to remove without investing hours of struggle, and in the end I was unsuccessful. They are located in a very inaccessible place and require that one depresses four tabs at the same time in order to release them.

After studying other videos and information on the internet (mostly wrong), I discovered that this is NOT the way to remove the grille. Those yellow clips are not designed to be removed as suggested by Blue Ox. The correct method is to press one little tab on the yellow clip from the FRONT of the grille. The attached diagram is from Honda instructions for fog light installation shows the correct method. By the way, I found these Honda instructions in a search of iRV2 forums.

I share this information to spare others the hours of agony I endured trying to follow the Blue Ox instructions.

Have you informed Blue Ox about that serious misdirection in in step number 8 of their 2012-2014 Honda CRV base plate installation instructions?

Good point Mel. I'm sure BlueOx would be grateful for the update.

By comparison, the folks at Roadmaster have you giving the grille a hard pull (step 7) to release it. Must've been "macho day" at Roadmaster when they worked up the procedure. ;-)

Yes, I have informed Blue Ox about the wrong instruction. However, the person I talked to didn't sound overly concerned, so it will be interesting to see if they revise the instructions. By the way, other videos and instructions on the internet usually involve yanking or prying the fascia off. While this may ultimately work, it will result in broken clips. Ask me how I know.

Check out the youtube video for the installation, I've watched a number of times and don't believe it has you removing those.

If you follow the procedure in the video, you will likely break the tabs off of two of the yellow clips. The grille must be removed first to properly disconnect the fascia from the yellow clips. I have watched that video dozens of times and believe the procedure is not as easy as they make it appear. I think the video producers left out the part where they had to yank the heck out of the fascia to break it away from the clips under the grille. Yes, the fascia will come off easily if you send a gorilla to do the job, which is why I tackled this project myself.

I also instlled a Blue Ox baseplate on a 2014 CRV , I just gave the grill a firm a positive pull and it came off nicely. Yea those directions are less than stellar.
