Blue OX Patriot braking system

Just wired up my break away switch today and I haven't used the Patriot braking system yet, but how does the brake controller know what the coach breaks are doing by just being plugged into your 12v acc. socket?

I do not claim to be an expert but according to the literature, the controller senses the braking action of the RV and sends a signal to the brake system in the towed vehicle. Since it is a proportional system, it will apply the brakes in the same proportion to the braking action of the RV.

So it is similar to using a motion sensor to note the deceleration and apply force to the brake proportionately. The harder the braking action, the more motion is sensed, and the more force used on the pedal in the toad. You can also apply the brake manually from the remote, as well as set the gain to apply more force depending on the weight of your toad.

The system works off of decelerometer technology much like your ABS system on vehicles today equipped with anti roll-over control, it scenes directional movement and applies the necessary braking force in this case at the toad mounted unit.
The unit in the toad sends an RF signal to the dash mounted controller and an indicator light will illuminate only when the toad brakes are being applied.
I recall a brief notation in the owners manual stating the system could be used without the dash mounted controller being operational.

A decelerometer, it makes sense now.

When I first used my Patriot, my son rode in the toad as I drove around town. He confirmed the Patriot does in fact operate in a proportional manner. The dash readout is simply an indicator of what is happening in the toad. The Patriot will function with or without it.
Now that you have the breakaway installed, I suggest you pull the pin once in a while to confirm its operation as well. When you are stopped of course.....

So then I take it that the decelerometer is in the Patriot unit itself. The controller is a monitor and a manual transmitter?

Blue OX Patriot braking system

Yes. The unit comes with a wireless remote that plugs in to a 12v in the coach. It is a monitor and you can manually apply the brake with it. It is not necessary for the actual patriot operation.

I'm wondering how the Patriot is affected when using the exhaust brake on the coach. I have a two stage exhaust brake and on "high" the deceleration is quite noticible.

My toad vehicle will be a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. I'm trying to decide on a braking system for it.

If you happen to buy a Blue OX Patriot unit you can call them and they will help you set that up. There is a sensitivity setting for that particular scenario.

A call to BlueOx for that question might be in order but IMO, the Patriot has a gain adjustment to control the sensitivity of the braking action. If you find it too sensitive, you can dial it back from the wireless remote in the coach. I typically run mine at 3 but the default is 5. The original version of the Patriot has its faults but I must say the new one I received as a replacement due to a dead internal battery problem has been virtually flawless. It really does work as advertised. I would not hesitate to buy another if I were in the market for one.

The gain only affects the pressure the unit puts on the brake, not to be confused with the sensitivity setting as to how easily it responds to to you decelerating. I know this because I just spoke to a tech at Blue OX yesterday.

Good morning everyone, DW has put me on repair restriction, the motor home is in the repair shop so I am typing this email from memory.
The Patriot Braking system has two settings:
Gain- this setting is the force which is applied to the toad brake pedal and can be adjusted 1-10 from the dash mounted remote or manually on the toad mounted unit
Sencetivity- this setting controls when the force is applied to the brake pedal and can be adjusted 0-5 manually at the toad mounted unit.
I run my sencetivity setting at 1 because of the engine brake.
This one of those things once you get it set up you'll wonder why you waited to get one.

I know this is an old thread. But if you are listening, please tell me all parts needed to install a Blue Ox BRK2019 Patriot 3 Brake system. Does everything come as a unit?
