Blue ox tow bar question

Hi,

Last week a dealer was having my class A delivered to my house. The guy turned up with a toad. As I do not have a toad brake controller I asked him was he driving it without brakes. He said it had brakes through the blue ox tow bar.

In the photo he had just disconnected a cable.

Make any sense?

Thanks,

Hi!

Yes, the toad brakes are used, and wired within the toad. The cable connected to your coach simply unplugs a plunger switch that applys the toad brakes if the 2 become disconnected. Other wise the brake unit works on inertia. If the coach brakes come on and create stopping inertia for the toad, the brakes are applied.

Nice system, no tow vehicle mods needed.

My blue ox tow bar looks like the one in the picture. Mine does not apply the toad brake. I do have a toad brake, but it has nothing to do with the tow bar.

I would guess that the guy meant the motor home brake slowed/stopped the car.

Now I'm really confused. The OP stated he has no toad brake. So how does inertia get the toad brakes to work?

Some think it is Some don't. I use the best brake I can. My SMI's Air Force One has an LED light on the toad which is visible in the MH rear camera when the brake is on. I believe it is safer than no toad brake. There is also the liability issue. I do not wish to give my insurance company an out because I did not have a toad brake.

Thanks all,

I was just curious about it as about to purchase a toad setup.

Am I better off with a dedicated tow brake?

On a side note I met a guy this week that he was towing a Chevy coltado truck behind an f53 with no supplemental brakes.

I have that Blue Ox Aventa tow bar and is doesn't have brakes of any kind. I believe the setup shown has a break a away switch that will stop the Toad if it breaks loose. I use the SMI Stay-in-Play braking system , plug in the lights and you are ready to go.

Ready Brute makes the Elite with built in surge brakes.

Blue Ox Tow Bar and toad brakes

So I'm going to take a wild guess here but is it possible this delivery guy had his vehicle set up with the Invisibrake or system similar that would've ran from the electrical 7 plug of the MH ? If he does this for a living it's something I would've done and perhaps used my own plug... so it's always ready to go... Just my thoughts....

If he has brakes you are probably right. Invisibrake and SMI Stay-in-Play are 2 such units.
