I was wondering were they run the wire from the switch to the
break system such as Break buddy, Patriot , roadmaster etc.
were does it come into the interior of the towed.

Hi Don,
Different systems may be wired differently. My USGEAR system activates the toad brakes just as if I was pressing the driver panic level on the cock pit control arm. Until the break away plunger is reinstated the toad brakes are in lock down mode. I carry extra plungers. I hope I never need to use them.

I just recently set up my MINI Cooper as a toad. I ran the wire for the breakaway switch through the firewall at a point where a main wiring harness passes through. Depending on the car you drive, it should be a fairly easy task of finding such a pass-through point. Look for other wiring, maybe a radio antenna lead, or perhaps even a speedometer cable (not too many cars have these anymore!).

Good luck! Let us know how it works out.

I run an SMI DUO so my break away wiring only runs a few feet to my underhood control unit.

Since we are talking about the breakaway switch, I have a question. What happens if someone steals you plug(the part that is pulled out) while you are useing the toad. Are you stuck there?

No sir not at all. In this case you need to employ a "field expedient."

I would like to ammend my remarks ...

I agree with bldrbob!

The breakaway switch is a NC or normally closed switch and inserting the plug opens the circuit. Cutting one leg or the other will cut the power to the brake unit and you should be able to proceed.

I think the breakaway switch closes the circuit when the plug is pulled.if you disconnect one of the wires it would disable the switch.

We think alike. I bought a spare for that reason. I think it was $3.00.

I bought a spare also. Not expensive but shipping is a killer.
