burned out two tranmissions

We have a 2010 merc. mariner and just recently took a 900 mile trip. Stopped along the way started car, let run and went thru gears . When we got to our destination wound not go into gear. Local dealer said it was burned up. Ok new tranny and on our way home. Same story stoped along way starter car let run and went from reverse to drive several times. got home guess what same problem tranny fried. It is at local dealer now but no word yet.

No disconect? No auxiliary pump? Sounds like you bought yourself two transmissions because you forgot to do your due diligence first

Check all the notes at Remco. In particular check note on Lube Pump Kit.
Store : Remco

Well, sorry to say you've just joined the legion of FOMOCO owners club of "Hey, you're cars on fire" club. Too bad Ford won't stand behind their product claims.

It seems to me that there had to have been a procedural mistake as the 2010 Mercury Mariner is approved by the manufacturer for recreational towing 4-down without the aid of disconnects, lube pumps, etc. BTW, the Mercury Mariner is mechanically identical to the Ford Escape.

Either that or you did not get the TSB issued pertaining to recreational towing and making sure of the correct transmission fluid level.

Now, what did you do wrong? Let's see if you precisely followed the owner's manual and/or the procedure outlined in the TSB.

* Did you have the transmission fluid level checked? The owner's manual specifically states to have a dealer check it as there's actually a Ford TSB out pertaining to the fluid level and recreational towing. It's TSB 09-20-13 and I will attach it below to this post. But as long as you did read that TSB, you could have checked the fluid level yourself. Also read this thread on another forum: CLICK HERE

* Did you start the engine and allow it to run for five minutes at the beginning of the day and then with your foot on the brake and the engine running shift the transmission into DRIVE, then into REVERSE before shifting back into neutral? Did you do this not only at the beginning of the day but every six hours thereafter?

The way you worded your post, it sounded as if you did not do this at the beginning of the day but instead did it mid-trip. I wonder if that would have made a difference?

I took the procedure from page 205-206 of your owner's manual. I have that attached also.

The Remco site says it's not towable four down without a lube pump.

Really? Oh, disregard my post then. Must have been later after the TSB was published probably because they had so many transmissions burning out.

Thanks for all the responses . Yes owner manuel says towable (why we bought it) We did exactly what was supossed to be done. ie let run and go from reverse to drive. We have also towed car several time before this with no problems. Need to check on aux. pump.

That pump is supplied from Remco to Ford/Lincoln dealers for their exclusive use. Remco will not sell directly to anyone else. Your local Ford dealer will be happy to install it for $ 3500.

FYI Hybid Escapes with CVT tranny do not have this problem.

The remco site information is contradictory. It says:

Notes

  • Towable as is with speed and/or distance restrictions. Please see Owner's Manual for confirmation and procedures.
  • It is not recommended to tow this vehicle over 65MPH
  • When towing for an extended period of time, start the vehicle as often as possible and allow it to run for five minutes to prevent battery drain.
  • Vehicle can be flat towed with Lube Pump Kit. Vehicle cannot be flat towed from Manufacturer as is.
  • Manufacturer has speed restriction on vehicle while towing so Remco offers a Lube Pump Kit(LP FORD KIT)so end user can tow beyond Manufacturer's speed restriction.

No lube pump, wrong procedure.

Sorry for your misfortune, but the upside is that you've now got two spare boat anchors.

General question: Do any of you towing a Ford product that have had issues utilize a rock shield that blocks air to the toad grill?
