Calculating tongue weight on a tow dolly

Even though I have a ShurLine scale, I'm curious to know how the tongue weight can be determined on a tow dolly. Is it the weight of the dolly plus the vehicles front axle rating? Thanks in advance.

The dolly weight is mostly on its wheels, not on the tongue. Dot tongue wrought should be quite low, maybe 50-100#. To that# you can do a proportion of the towed vehicle's front axle weight based on the% of the distance that the front axle lands ahead of the dolly wheels. If the towed vehicle axle is 25% ahead of the dolly-axle-to-tongue distance, then add 25% of the vehicle axle weight to tongue weight.

No way to calculate the dolly tongue weight. You have a scale, measure the weight on the tongue.

I've had my Nissan Murano on my Master Tow dolly, unhooked from the motorhome.
Didn't weigh it but did pick the tongue up to estimate weight.
No more than 75 pounds, and probably closer to 50.

Another way I have heard to get the tongue weight is to load the tow dolly and put some kind of cone/support under the hitch point and simply put a scale under that. I don't have a tow dolly but based on a couple posts I have seen here and other places, if it is less than #250 then a bathroom scale should do the trick. At least it will be close enough to determine if you need to go to a bigger scale. BTW...I would suspect that the support under the hitch attachment point should raise the dolly connection arm up the the same level as the hitch attachment point.

I could really be that simple...I think. LOL
