Can I tow a Dodge Ram?
I have a Fleetwood Excursion - which is a 300 hp Freightliner diesel pusher with a Allison transmission. I'm wanting to know if I can tow our Dodge Quad Cab Ram 1500? On research, it seems the Ram is 6600 lbs. The Excursion does have a 10,000 lbs hitch. Here is the specs from the website for the Excursion ....
GVWR (lbs)1 26,000 Front GAWR (lbs)2 10,500 Rear GAWR (lbs)2 17,500 GCWR (lbs)3 30,000 Hitch Rating Weight (lbs)4 10,000
Thoughts?

Which Allison is it? The 2500 or 3000 series. Also, the numbers you gave suggest it will be close, but could be done. If you have the Allison 2500, you have the lower torque 6.7, and that will suck to tow a RAM with....

To me, a toad should be a sub-compact or at most a compact car. A full-size pickup that weighs 6,600 pounds empty is overkill. Anyone that can afford a diesel pusher can also afford a special small car as their toad. A Honda Fit (hatchback = small station wagon) weighs less than 3,000 pounds, and makes an excellent toad.

I tow a Ram 1500. It doesn't weigh 6600 lbs. Mine is a 2010 4x4 and with a full tank of gasoline it weighs 5760 with 150 pound me in it! It does help to be a 4x4 with the electric neutral as the steering doesn't lock. So just follow the instructions in the manual putit in park and lock the doors. Key in your pocket. My DP is a 2010 Fleetwood Discovery LE with a 10,000 pound hitch. I did lose 1/2 mile per gallon when I got rid of my 3300 pound HHR. I now average over the last 25,000 miles 7.4 MPG.

I have a Jeep that we can tow. But was thinking about towing our Ram because we could put a golf cart or scooters in the bed. But guess not. Thanks

Thanks. A Discovery has a bigger engine, chassis and transmission. I guess I need to stick to the jeep.

I would think you need to stick with the Jeep.....we do and we have 380HP/1050TQ with the Allison 3000 series and could tow my RAM but it is pretty heavy. I am thinking that it is around 5600# like another pointed out, which isn't a lot heavier than the Jeep. But if you start putting stuff in the back, you are really loading yourself up. With your power/torque/ratings, I would go with the lightest you have.

I tow a 2014 Ram 1500 Crew cab 4X4 with a Cummins ISC 350HP 1050 Torque. I don't notice much difference between it & anything else I tow. Going up 6% grades I may be a couple MPH slower. I run with a motorcycle on a lift & the truck has a 2 seat ATV in the bed. I also carry a 14' PortaBote with a 6HP motor and plan to put some Kayaks on the truck roof. Camping is FUN!

You have a 4,000 lb. tow limit. This is based on GCWR-GVWR and the fact you have the 2100 transmission (limited to 30K). My guess is if you greatly exceed the 30K limit, you may reduce the transmission's life.

Thanks. That answers my question. I'll tow the jeep.

I've got 600hp and a 15,000lb hitch with matching GCWR. Why in the world would I limit myself to a compact car?

I have a 2012 Dodge Ram extended cab 4x4 and mine weighs 5660 lb with me in it @ 180 lb. and full tank of gas. I might add I hate sub-compact cars and need a pickup for various reasons so it's my truck and I'll tow it if I wanna

That's 4,000lb IF he's at GVWR already. If he's not, it's the difference between his loaded weight and GCWR.
