Call VW direct!! When I was searching for a toad, my first choice was a VW Beetle but was told that if I wanted to maintain the warranty, it could not be towed 4 wheels down. This was for both automatic and manual transmissions.

Good luck

Bruner,
There's been several threads about towing the late model VW TDI units. The short blunt answer is NO. Volkswagen of America does not authorize ANY of it's fleet to be flat towed, four down. There are numerous folks out there that would jump at it in a heartbeat if they made models that were. And, in fact there are numerous folks out there that ALREADY DO TOW THEM four down.

I've chatted with several on the road in campgrounds etc. and many have actually talked with the transmission techs at their local VW dealers. And the techs, while not personally authorizing them to be towed, have told these folks nothing will happen to the stick transmissions if they're flat towed. Some of the folks I've come in contact with still had warranty on theirs and some didn't. The ones who did, hooked up a base plate, tow bar and headed down the road and said the he.. with the warranty.

They want the mileage and performance of the TDI engine. I've owned two VW Beetles with the TDI engine and absolutely loved both of them. One was an '03 and the other, an '04. Most people are still clueless that VW even makes a diesel much less newer models.

But, again, the ones I've chatted with in campgrounds have had thousands and thousands of towed miles on them and not one single problem has developed. The only thing is, you take it upon yourself to make the decision to do it. If we didn't have the need for a truck as a toad and to haul our motorcycle in, I'd have a Jetta Sport Wagon TDI behind our coach without hesitation. It would definitely have to be stick though.

Plus, the stick get a tad bit better mileage anyway. Good luck.

We'd love to get a Passat wagon as a toad. DW can't drive a stick-shift, so an automatic would be a basic requirement. Our present family vehicle is an '03 Kia Sedona. We weren't thinking RV toad when we bought it and, unfortunately, it weighs 4800 pounds (curb weight). A dolly would probably weigh 1200 pounds for a car that heavy, which would push us over the 5000 pound hitch limit on the MH.

The Sedona is pushing 100K on the odometer, so maybe a change is in the wind. Still looking at alternatives - maybe an already equipped toad through Escapees. With two Labradors, a wagon is a basic requirement.

not many auto cars can be chosen as a dinghy toad nowadays, either 4wd like jeep or 2wd honda crv or fit. satarn is basically a honda in powertrain perspective. there might be others but very few and i am not aware of...
