I have never seen a law requiring a car in tow sign in Oregon...

Probably wouldn't be a bad idea but as to being required by law........
Just spent some time on Ask.com, Google, NHTSA, etc. and could find NO requirement for such a sign.
Asked a Texas DPS officer who looked at me like I was crazy - definitely not required in Texas!
Wouldn't all 18 wheelers or rent-a-trailers be required?

Somehow I don't find it surprising that a company that makes the tow signs says they're required.

hawaiians almost always post a "CAR IN TOE" sign written with spray paint on the rear window when towing a car on the H1 freeway with a rope... even at night, with no lights of course ...

You guys are more than likely are right about when the sign is required, towing without working tail lights.
I am still going to have the sign on the toad anyway as we travel around the country at our 60 mph, it's nice to be retired, we feel we have to give the people coming up behind us doing 80-90 mph some warning. As for our speed we still pass a lot of other vehicles including other RVs-trucks-cars-horse and buggies, but never any motorcycles.

This question was brought up in another RV site.
FWIW, I found a place to order the signs from
http://http://www.anythingrv.com/sta...x.php/air_comp
Hope this helps.
Im thinkign about getting one for our Jeep toad.
Especially when in Cali.

Magnetic Vehicle Towing SIgns

After a few close calls (getting side swiped) while towing our trailers, I too was searching for some simple way of letting other drivers know that there was a trailer behind us ... that we were towing!

I hope I'm not breaking any rules here (I'm new), but here is a site that we found that provides a safety sign to display on your car or truck while towing any kind of trailer... www.RicMic.com

Even though this thread is a bit old, I hope this helps you or someone else. I'm sure that these signs have save us from at least three major collisions and possibly saved our lives.

Kind of like the charts that some towed brake companies post saying the aux brakes are required in most states.

Even if I wanted or needed to use one in our Honda Ody it wouldn't do any good as the windows are so dark no one could see it!!

The entire premise of a "Car in Tow" sign is ridiculous. Sign makers make it sound necessary...what a surprise. I may not be the brightest bulb but I cannot think of one instance where a sign in my toad would help anyone. If someone is so stupid that they can't see I'm towing a car then a sign is not going to help them. Would someone care to enlighten me here?

Amen to you Brother Macnkat, if you can't see my motorhome ahead of the toad, we be in big trouble. I also love the one "I go where I'm towed to" my English teacher would be appalled.

in hawaii one often sees old cars being rope-towed on the h1 freeway with ''car in toe'' spray painted on the rear window.

I totally agree! Some of the idiot drivers couldn't be helped with a billboard!
