Cherokee Recall

ZF has a recall on 9 speed tran. Tran. will shift to neutral unexpectedly. Another reason I'll never get one of these new Jeeps. Still plan to get Wrangler if something happens to my Liberty that I can't get fixed.

There is now a class-action lawsuit against Fiat/Chrysler over the design of Jeeps electronic "shifter".
Last Feb. our Jeep GC was totaled when hit by a semi. We really wanted a new Jeep, but the electronic "shifter" design was already in trouble.
Fiat/Chryslers response: "use your parking brake to counter a shifter malfunction that can cause an unexpected roll-away".

No recall on mine so part of this information is wrong and is not all of them

Hopefully not a NEW Wrangler, it is going the way of the Cherokee.
But then again I love my Trailhawk, I do hate the cheesy Flat Tow OOPS we screwed up fix, but then again I've never had the issue. I keep my tires rotated and balanced along with the a good alignment and I made sure the height is setup correctly.

I don't know why people aren't using the Parking brake anyway. That is what it is for Parking, it takes the strain off of the transmission while parked. I use it on all my vehicles, have you ever had a time when it doesn't seem to want to shift out of Park? That's because you have the tranny all bound up and it doesn't want to shift.
Use the Parking Brake

this recall has nothing to due with parking brake or park position of tran. this situation is while driving the tran. will just go to neutral on it's own without warning!!!!

The recall is on the GRAND Cherokee, not the Cherokee. While quite a few of the 14/15 Cherokees have their transmission issues, unexpectedly shifting into neutral is not one of them.

Now that makes more sense. But I will put a dollar on it that they find out that the operator accidentally hits the shifter when reaching for or returning their cup to the cup holder.
The need to redesign where the cup holder and gear shifter are.

I love the way information gets twisted on the internet.

The recall has nothing to do with the transmission going into neutral, but actually is the opposite--it can go into drive or reverse when you think it's in park.

From Autoweek Magazine.

"The issue itself is not a fault of engineering but rather design, as the shifter returns to the default center position without giving the driver sufficient feedback as to the selected gear.

As a result, a number of owners have exited their vehicles thinking that they had put the vehicle into Park, while in reality it remained in Drive or Reverse position. The NHTSA has called the operation of the shifter "unintuitive" and had opened an investigation into the issue months ago."

I want to correct my above statement. The OP is absolutely correct as I just received my recall notice. There is in fact a recall on the 2014/2015 CHEROKEE transmission.

The Campaign No. is 16V529000 described as follows:

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 Jeep Cherokee and 2015 Chrysler 200, Jeep Renegade and RAM ProMaster vehicles equipped with 9-speed automatic transmissions. The transmission sensor clusters may have insufficient crimps in the transmission wire harness, and as a result, the transmission may unexpectedly shift to neutral.

Dang, Cherokees too? I haven't heard anything about the ZF going into neutral, just about everything else that could go wrong with a transmission, but not that particular issue. We haven't got a recall notice for our 2014.

I just received an email two days ago. You can check your VIN at the following site: https://vinrcl.safercar.gov/vin/ Mine was not on the list.

I have had trouble with with the third to first third issue with my transmission from day one. There have been a couple of TSBs issued that helped somewhat for a while, but then I started getting a clunking sound when it shifted from 4th to 5th.

When I had it at the dealership for the RV wiring kit installation I had to contact JeepCares (Kori was my rep) to get it covered under warranty. I also mentioned my transmission issues to Kori. Two days later I received a phone call from my dealership that they had received authorization to replace the transmission. However they had to wait until after 8/1 to order it so that I received the latest version. The new transmission arrived yesterday and is being installed today.

Based on my experience with Kori, JeepCares is the best thing FCA has going for themselves. She stayed in constant contact with me and the dealership. Even the servce manager was impressed.

JeepCares can be contacted at: fcasocial@fcagroup.com
